Molds can grow wherever there is moisture, oxygen, and a something for the mold to feed on. Mold can grow on almost any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. Molds grow in our homes in moist warm areas like damp basements, closets, and bathrooms, even after the moisture has dried. Molds can also grow in places where fresh food is stored such as refrigerator drip trays, garbage pails and sinks. In its 2000 report “Clearing the Air: Asthma and Indoor Air Exposures,” IOM concluded that there is sufficient evidence of an association between exposure to mold and exacerbations of asthma.
