Molds can grow wherever there is moisture, oxygen, and a something for the mold to feed on. Mold can grow on almost any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. Molds grow in our homes in moist warm areas like damp basements, closets, and bathrooms, even after the moisture has dried. Molds can also grow in places where fresh food is stored such as refrigerator drip trays, garbage pails and sinks. The worst place that molds can grow, however, is inside wall cavities and flooring of our homes, wherever there may be cellulose materials they can feed on, such as wood, ceiling tiles, or plasterboard, even if they are not visible, and they have sustained water damage at one time or another.
We know that molds can cause illness when people are exposed to extensive mold growth indoors. In its 1993 report “Indoor Allergens,” the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that airborne fungal allergens were most often associated with allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis, allergic asthma, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. In its 2000 report “Clearing the Air: Asthma and Indoor Air Exposures,” IOM concluded that there is sufficient evidence of an association between exposure to mold and exacerbations of asthma.
Mold remediation or Mold Abatement is the term used to describe the clean up and removal process of toxic mold from a home, office, school, building or other indoor area. If there is only a small amount of mold present, you may be able to clean away the mold with strong cleaning supplies. There are about 150 different types of household mold. Mold spores are often always present in a home, but become an issue when they land on a damp or wet surface and begin growing.
- Stachybotrys is the infamous black mold that made the news in association with ill health effects many years ago. It needs a very damp area to grow, and is considered a Hazard Class A mould, as it can create toxins. It looks black on surfaces.
- Alternaria appears as a black or grey colored mold that can grow in wet or dusty areas. It is classified as a Hazard Class B mould, and has been known to cause various allergic reactions.
- Aspergillus is another common mold. Aspergillus is generally classified as a Hazard Class A or B as this type of mold causes allergic reactions or infections in people with weak immune systems.
- Cladosporium, Penicillium & Ulocladium are other forms of household mold that are not as toxic as the other molds, but still could cause health issues
